Discrimination doesn’t happen in Germany, does it?
Yes, unfortunately it does.
A representative survey conducted by the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency in 2016 showed that a considerable number of people (35.6 per cent) had experienced or observed discrimination in the past two years.
Though the GETA aims for comprehensive coverage, not every discrimination is included in the GETA. On the next slide, the diagram on the left shows the characteristics on the basis of which poll takers experienced discrimination. The diagram on the right shows the percentage of perceived discrimination both covered by the GETA and characteristics not covered there.

Total cases
Today yet, sex and "race" account for most of the cases of perceived discrimination. Further, sex and sexual identity are often confused. For example: When a woman is rejected as an applicant due to being a woman, the relevant characteristic is sex, not sexual identity. Furthermore, in the example that an individual distributes pornography among their colleagues, it constitutes sexual harassment, regardless of the sex of the people involved.
The GETA covers a little over 80% of possible discrimination. Discrimination based on socio-economically induced disadvantages (e.g. due to poverty, social background, cultural education) remains uncovered by the GETA.

The study also indicates that roughly 40 percent of those affected remained impassive upon being discriminated against. The number of unreported cases is likely to be much higher. Often times accounts of discrimination remain unreported and at times are not recognized as such.

This course therefore aims at informing you about discriminatory and (sexually) harassing behavior and at sensitizing you to unravel what occurs in your everyday life. The following topics will be addressed::
- What behavior or measure amounts to discrimination?
- What consequences can discrimination lead to?
- What are the rights of those affected and who provides assistance?
After completing this course you will be able to reflect on your own actions and help yourself, your company and others in case you or someone else is ever discriminated against.
